Functional Training (FT) - New Summer Class
What is a Functional Training - FT- Class
This is a 60 minute class using multi-jointed movements like the squat, push up, and lunge; strength balance exercises like the single arm press and banded clamshells to help build unilateral strength and to prevent injury; and conditioning exercises like rowing and running. Each hour starts with a strength focus and finishes with a sweaty session. Prepare to burn calories, get leaner, and feel stronger!
How fit do I need to take this class?
This class is OPEN to all levels of fitness. No experience is necessary. If you have never trained before this class is a great way to get started as all classes are led by a Certified Westside coach who will help you move safely, effectively, plus motivate you weekly. It is also a fun class for those who are currently lifting but want some extra sweat sessions, build more lean muscle, and get ready for some summer outdoor fun!

FAQ
Can I do this class if I have no training in weightlifting?
Yes! Our coaches our there to help you move safely and effectively and will guide you to proper progressions or weights to use. We will be using dumbbells and kettlebells only in this class. No barbells. And the coach will start you off with light weight
Can I do this class if I have no cardio conditioning?
Yes! Our coaches will meet you where you are at in your fitness. For example: if there is a 500m row they will reduce the meters for you so you can finish the workout at the same time as the rest of the class. As you get more fit they will increase the meters or weights to keep you challenged.
How is this class different from your regular Westside (WS) classes?
Our Westside classes involve more skilled movements like the clean and jerk, use heavier weights, include barbells, and have higher skilled workouts. Anyone can attend these classes but because they have higher skilled movements we require all new clients do the Get Started sessions before attending WS classes. We highly recommend trying the WS classes in the future if your looking to be challenged and pushed in new ways!
What if I am injured, burnt out from work, or new to training?
We highly recommend this class if you are coming back from an injury, burnt out at work, have been overtraining, or are new to group classes. This class focuses a ton on unilateral balance (which prevents future injury), improved posture and core, while still getting a good sweat on and building lean muscle. Because we use dumbbells and kettlebells we can do a ton of exercises that will work around most injuries. We can also adjust workouts with weight, reps, and time so we can meet you where you’re at in your current fitness. We want you to go home feeling awesome and inspired to come back for more.
What I wear to class?
Any type of fitness gear that feels comfortable to move in. We will be squatting so any type of pant or short that allows you to do this. Please wear gym shoes like cross trainers or running shoes and bring your water bottle to stay hydrated.
If I am current member can I take this class?
Yes! Your monthly membership includes these classes. And we highly recommend them if you have an overwhelming week, have a nagging injury, or are feeling burnt out. The classes are still very challenging but use less high skilled movements. You will continue to build lean muscle, strength, and burn a ton of calories.
Can my friend join if they have never done a Westside Class?
Yes! The Functional Training class requires no experience. We would love to have your friends join our community!
In the past few months I've noticed a big difference in my health. I feel more energized, which I notice most around the "3 PM slump." I used to really crash in the afternoon, and now I feel energized throughout the day. I also was surprised how I didn't have to make any huge or drastic changes - just a couple of tips that made a big difference, so much so I lost 7% body fat!
