Specialized Classes: Functional Training (FT) and Strength Classes
What is a Functional Training - FT- Class
This is a 60 minute class using multi-jointed movements like the squat, push up, and lunge; strength balance exercises like the single arm press and banded clamshells to help build unilateral strength and to prevent injury; and conditioning exercises like rowing and box step ups. Each hour starts with a strength focus and finishes with a sweaty session. Prepare to burn calories, get leaner, and feel stronger!
What is a Strength Class
This is a 60 minute class. We will rotate around the three big lifts: Back Squat, Deadlift, and Bench Press. There will also be a heavy focus on building upper body strength, like the Strict Pullup and Strict Bar Dip. Each hour starts with one of the big lifts, then focuses on accessory exercises around that lift, plus upper body pushing or pulling. Prepare to get strong!
Do I need to be fit to take these classes?
These classes are OPEN to all levels of fitness. No experience is necessary. If you have never trained before these classes are a great way to get started as all classes are led by a Certified Westside coach who will help you move safely, effectively, plus motivate you weekly. It is also a fun class for those who are currently lifting but want to spend extra time getting strong (strength class) or for those who want another sweat session and to build more lean muscle (functional training class).

FAQ
Can I do these classes if I have no training in weightlifting?
Yes! Our coaches will teach you how to move correctly, help you move safely and effectively, and will guide you to proper progressions or weights to use.
How is this class different from your regular Westside (WS) classes?
Our Westside classes involve more skilled movements like the clean and jerk and have high intense conditioning workouts. Anyone can attend these classes but because they have higher skilled movements we require all new clients do the Get Started sessions before attending WS classes. We highly recommend trying the WS classes in the future if your looking to be challenged and pushed in new ways!
What if I am injured, burnt out from work, or new to training?
We highly recommend the (FT) functional training class if you are coming back from an injury, burnt out at work, have been overtraining, or are new to group classes. The (FT) functional training class focuses a ton on unilateral balance (which prevents future injury), improved posture and core, while still getting a good sweat on and building lean muscle. Because we use dumbbells and kettlebells we can do a ton of exercises that will work around most injuries. We can also adjust workouts with weight, reps, and time so we can meet you where you’re at in your current fitness. We want you to go home feeling awesome and inspired to come back for more.
What do I wear to class?
Any type of fitness gear that feels comfortable to move in. We will be squatting so any type of pant or short that allows you to do this. Please wear gym shoes like cross trainers and bring your water bottle to stay hydrated.

Can my friend join if they have never done a Westside Class?

In the past few months I've noticed a big difference in my health. I feel more energized, which I notice most around the "3 PM slump."
